Luminescence 2003
Gallery En Tangsøgade 4, Udstilling Bøvlingbjerg, Denmark
Phosphorescent pigment on paper/veil, incandescent flash of light at 15 minute intervals, text — Integrated in the exhibition space
In Denmark, the North Sea is always present in people's lives, be it through fishing activities, daily fog or cold winds. Inspired by this geographical situation, Luminescence was created for En Tangsøgade 4 Udstilling. This installation attempts to disorient or destabilise the spectator through confrontation with a luminous disc floating horizontally above the floor. The phosphorescent paper-veil shining in space gives the spectator the impression of a panoramic view of our blue planet. In this space, it is through the evanescence of the luminous paper-veil disk that the spectator is brought to a contemplative state. Only the text on the wall …an ocean between…one wave at a time…, gives the spectator a bearing on his/her situation and permits another reading of the work, that pertaining to cultural geography. The symbolic reading of the ocean, sea of all cultures, must be understood in a contemporary global context. As with the cadence of waves, we must gradually and patiently apprehend all cultures. In this space, it is by the evanescent light of the paper/veil that the viewer is led to a contemplative state.
